#4 • Hawkins "Seward Alaska 1950" Streetscape Oil Painting

Part of October 2023 Premier Auction (live auction by Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals)

High bid $700.00

Status: Sold

Category: Art: Alaskan Originals

An original oil streetscape of Seward, Alaska circa 1950 depicting a man and his faithful canine companion, head down, hands in pockets, walking through the streets of Seward past garages and storage building, aiming for the gently illuminated and snow covered houses down at the water's edge. Signed for "Hawkins" and marked "Seward Alaska 1950", lower right and again en verso. Measures approximately 21" x 25" overall; 16" x 20" image sight. The work warrants further research, the signature matches the historic Brown & Hawkins store with identical font as seen in their signature advertisements. It is suspected this was either done by the hand of a Hawkins family namesake, or commissioned for them; initial research has not been able to clearly identify the artist, whose skill is readily apparent and of comparable or superior quality to noted artists of the period.
