A signed and numbered 864/950 print by the late Alaskan artist Fred Machetanz (1908-2002), entitled "The Tender Arctic". The work depicts the warmth and tenderness of a young five-month old cub nuzzling his mother, which pleases her, as is shown when her ears are folded back and close to her head. Mothers and cubs remain together until the little one is almost fully grown. Cubs are usually born between November and February, and at birth, cubs are surprisingly small, weighing between one and two pounds and being seven to twelve inches in length. This image shows the pair on the Arctic ice in May when the sun is well on its way north and the days have no real darkness. Numbered lower left and hand-signed in graphite lower right by the artist. Loose, the print is housed in the original Mill Pond Press folio with the original artist's biography and information about the artwork. Measures approximately 24.5" x 37.75". Note: This item is exceptionally large and/or heavy, and may require custom boxing or crating depending on the intended destination and available carrier services.
