A signed and numbered 367/950 print by Alaska artist Fred Machetanz (1908-2002), entitled "Into the Home Stretch". The work depicts a dog team who has been jogging along at a steady pace during the day, and having rounded a curve in the trail, are once more on remembered ground with familiar sights. Now that they are on the home stretch, their pace picks up, for they are hungry and ready to bed down for the night. The temperature has been below zero, but there has been no wind, and this is evident in the lovely hoar frost on the birches and alders, which makes every twig stand out in silver white against the clear blue skies of winter. Guiding the team by spoken commands is a trapper returning to camp from a trip to the village trading post with enough supplies to last until after breakup. A good dog team will pull a hundred pounds per dog on a run of thirty or so miles, and until the airplane, this was the sole means of transportation during the winter and a key factor in opening the Northern Frontier. Matted and framed, it measures approximately 29" x 40.5" overall. Note: This item is exceptionally large and/or heavy, and may require custom boxing or crating depending on the intended destination and available carrier services.
