A signed and numbered 864/950 print by the late Alaskan artist Fred Machetanz (1908-2002), entitled "Moonlit Stakeout". The work depicts the standard procedure when out on the trail with a sled dog team over an extended period of time - the first thing before setting up camp is to stake the dogs to trees or brush so they will have a chance to stretch out and rest after the day's run. A chain is used so they cannot bite through it. The chains are about five feet long, and the dogs are positioned so they cannot reach each other. This is especially important later on at feeding time. This painting was based upon the artist's memory of his first long dog team trip back in 1935 while traveling through the forest area inland from the Alaska Native village of Unalakleet. The days were cold and clear, and traveling and making camp in the full moonlight were experiences never to be forgotten. Numbered lower left and hand-signed in graphite lower right by the artist. Loose, the print is housed in the original Mill Pond Press folio with the original artist's biography and information about the artwork. Measures approximately 24.25" x 37.75".
