A signed and numbered 311/950 print by Alaska artist Fred Machetanz (1908-2002) entitled "Fishing Rights", depicting a brown bear who announces, in no uncertain terms, his rights to the salmon streams of Alaska. Alaska grizzlies and brown bears are acknowledged to be the same species, although there are differences in size, and this is thought to be a result of differing diets. Where their diet consists of berries, roots and small animals, the grizzly bears are smaller, but where there are fish available, the bears grow larger and are recognized as browns. During the salmon run, brown bears converge on waterways to scoop the fish out of the water with a paw or sometimes with their mouths, as this beast will do. Numbered lower left and hand-signed in graphite lower right by the artist. Shrink-wrapped on board with an artist's biography and information about the artwork; plastic wrap is torn slightly at one corner as shown. Measures approximately 25" x 37.5".
