A signed and numbered 634/950 print by Alaska artist Fred Machetanz (1908-2002) entitled "Trail of the Great White Bear", depicting an Alaska Native hunter standing on the ice pack which is still shorebound in the Arctic. Tides and winds of early spring have caused fields to break off and crash back together, grinding upward into walls of pressure ice. These walls of ice provide vantage points for hunters. This hunter, having seen polar bear tracks in the snow, has stopped and climbed up for a better look. With his binoculars, he studies where "Nanook" or the "great white bear," as his people call him, might have gone. At this point, he has to decide if he will follow the trail or not, for a polar bear is a formidable enemy to stalk. At times, they have been known to circle back when followed and attack hunters from the rear. Matted and framed with information about the artist en verso, it measures approximately 32" x 26.5" overall.
