A stunning very early oil painting on hide by Alaska artist Rie Muñoz entitled "Gardnerville Salt Chuck, Alaska." The image, painted approximately nine years after arriving in Alaska and twelve years before the artist retired from regular work to devote her career to painting, captures a portion of the historic gold, silver, copper and palladium mine on the southeast side of Prince of Wales Island. The Salt Chuck mine operated from 1905 to 1941 and processed more than 326,000 tons of ore in its heyday, with the mine's opening about a half mile uphill from the mill area. Along the shore was the mill, superintendent's house, general office, workers cabins, mess hall, assay shop, outhouses, and storage sheds. Titled, signed, and dated by the artist lower right c.1960, the hide is pierced around the perimeter and stretched within a large format wooden frame; a few holes and surface abraisons are present as photographed. Frame measures approximately 43.75" x 55".
