A c.1990s signed and numbered 2/500 print by Alaska artist Rie Muñoz entitled "Sunday Morning". The work depicts a small jewel of a church, St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox, located in the heart of Juneau, only a few blocks down the hill from the artist's house. Come Sunday mornings, the bells chime, calling the congregation to gather for the early morning service; as shown a man and woman are climbing the steps as the priest greets them, lush trees are in the background, and seagulls are flying overhead. The painting is accompanied by a photograph of the artist and a note from the Rie Muñoz Gallery that reads "Sunday Morning - This partially finished original watercolor painting by Rie Munoz is entitled Sunday Morning. The artist quit this piece half way through as she didn't like how it was coming out. Specifically she didn't approve of all the congregation all looking at the viewer of the painting. The next painting she did of the same subject she liked and published a limited edition print. included. [sic] Notice how less busy it is and the focal point is the church and red tree, then the two people and the welcoming priest." Numbered lower center and signed by the artist lower right; the original referenced in the gallery note is for the work-in-progress shown in the photograph of the artist working in her studio, and is available within this auction for your bidding pleasure.
