A c.1992 double-sided work-in-progress by Alaska artist Rie Muñoz entitled "Night on the Balcony". The first side shows the artist sleeping on her balcony in Juneau, with her dog Muncie, a yellow lab mix, at her side. The reverse side shows a similar overall image, in a more finished, although not entirely finished, state. The painting is accompanied by a note from the Rie Muñoz Gallery that reads "Night on the Balcony - Rie Muñoz would often sleep on her porch on a warm summer's night. This painting had a couple of trials before the final piece was painted. (A) The first attempt. The artist didn't like it, so as she often does, she flipped the paper over and tried again. (B) This version was coming out much better. Rie was finishing up the dark blue pillow when a drop of paint fell on her eye! She tried to get it off but it made her look like she had a black eye. So much for that. (C) This lithograph was printed from the final watercolor. The railing of the porch was left unfinished intentionally as there would have been too many lines distracting from the focal point; Rie!" Both sides, partially painted with watercolor, also show the faint pencil lines of additional details not yet enhanced with color. The second side is signed and dated c.1992 by the artist, lower right. This example contains (A) and (B) as noted above, and the lithograph (C), executed the following year, is available in this auction for your bidding pleasure. Paper measures approximately 11.5" x 8.25".
