A double-sided original work-in-progress by Alaska artist Rie Muñoz featuring "Napping on the Ferry" on one side. The image depicts a man sitting in a lounge chair on the ferry, head back and eyes closed, his luggage piled by his feet. Outside the ferry window, two seagulls fly above the water's waves, and the shore is visible in the distance with more birds in the air. The reverse side shows two kayaks, both dry-docked upside down, and three Alaska Native people standing closer to the water's edge. The painting is accompanied by a note from the Rie Muñoz Gallery that reads "Napping on the Ferry - This partially finished original shows a gentleman napping on one of our ferries in SE Alaska. The artist would do a field sketch (she always carried a sketchbook with her), followed by several more detailed composite sketches which she would do in pen and ink in her studio. When Rie was happy with the composition, she would take an overhead projector and project the composite sketch on to her 300lb. Arches watercolor paper. Muñoz would then start painting in the image. This process would usually take a week for a small to medium sized painting. The brush strokes on the side were done to make sure the color was correct before applying it to the painting. Note the crop marks where she wanted the mat(s) to come in to the image. This painting also has an unfinished image on the back which 'didn't make the cut.' About 20% of the artist's paintings have an attempt on the back. She didn't want to waste paper! There is a note to self #5 Morro, this means it was the 5th painting she did during a visit to Morro Bay, CA where she would stay during the winter with her brother." Both sides, partially painted with watercolor, also show the faint pencil lines of additional details not yet enhanced with color, along with penciled notes and a plethora of brush strokes testing the colors in the margins, particularly on the ferry side. Paper measures approximately 5.25" x 11.25". While undated, stylistically, the work aligns with the 1990s or early 2000s.
