A c.1996 original collage study by Alaska artist Rie Muñoz that later became the work entitled "Priest, Yukon River". The collage features three handwritten notes by the artist that describe two ink sketches, two watercolor works-in-progress, and a final watercolor painting that later was reproduced as a limited edition print of 950. The artist made three starts on this subject; in the first painting she used the actual colors of the church which she found too somber. In her second effort, the priest was as stiff as the rake. In her third attempt, she was happy with the result as it depicts the "New" church at Russian Mission on the Yukon River - dilapidated as the new church may be, the "old church" teeters precariously in the tall grass only a hundred yards or so away (unseen); a family powers a motorboat in the Yukon river in the distance, and a flock of gulls flies above. The artist references her c.1989 sketchbook which, along with the rest, was donated to the Juneau Douglas City Museum in 2022; all of her sketchbooks have been digitized as well, and are available for reading on the artist's website. The collage is backed in blue, housed in a simple frame, and measures approximately 32.25" x 28.25" overall.
