A c.1987 work-in-progress by Alaska artist Rie Muñoz entitled "Overheaded". The work illustrates the Sitka airport terminal, crowded with people, waiting at or near the Alaska Airlines ticketing counter, bags in hand or at their feet, parents resting with their children on the floor. The painting is accompanied by a note from the Rie Muñoz Gallery that reads "Overheaded - The word 'Overheaded' has an unpleasant ring to all traveling Alaskans. It simply means that the plane you had hoped to board is flying over our stop. Why? Because visibility is nil due to heavy snowfall, fog, etc. Small planes also overhead for the above reasons. In Tenakee, where the airfield is the inlet, the float planes will also overhead when the water is too rough. So, one sits and waits for milder conditions and the next flight." (A) This first attempt was rejected by the artist as the writing, penciled in, would have have [sic] distracting. Rie ended up with this finished version (B) which was published as a limited edition lithograph." The piece shows pencil lines, arrows, faint writing above the ticket counter, and a plethora of brush strokes testing the colors in the far-right margin. This is example (A) as mentioned in the gallery note, and example (B), the limited edition lithograph published twelve years later, is available within this auction for your bidding pleasure. Titled, signed, and dated c.1987 by the artist en verso. Measures approximately 11.25" x 14.75".
