Carved ivory Tupilak totem figurine featuring both animal and human-like attributes, from Greenland or Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning "Land of the People", the indigenous name for Greenland. A Tupilaq, or Tupilak, is a mythological monster, carved by an angakkuq, a shaman, from animal parts, traditionally bones, skin, and hair. They represent both natural and supernatural aspects of Greenlandic Inuit culture. No maker's mark is readily visible; it measures approximately 1" x 1.25" x 3.5" tall.
