A finely carved marine sculpture by contemporary Inupiaq artist Brian Kulik (b. 1976), depicting a halibut gliding above an underwater landscape inspired by the rich fishing grounds of Alaska's Bering Sea. Executed from creamy white walrus tusk, the halibut is rendered with exceptional realism, displaying carefully carved fins, gill plates, lateral contours, and inset eyes that bring the fish convincingly to life. Rather than resting directly on its base, the halibut is elevated atop an artfully arranged pile of "rocks" fashioned from naturally mineralized walrus teeth, their warm honey and caramel tones providing a striking contrast to the bright tusk carving above. Nestled among the stones are additional marine forms, including shellfish and other sea life, creating a layered coastal tableau that rewards close examination. The entire composition is mounted upon a polished section of fossilized mammoth tusk exhibiting dramatic natural coloration in shades of cream, chocolate brown, and deep black, further enhancing the illusion of a rocky seabed worn by time and tide. The thoughtful combination of contemporary carving with ancient fossil material creates a visually compelling work that blends traditional Alaska Native artistry with the natural beauty of Arctic materials. Signed on the underside by the artist, measures approximately 6.5" x 2.75" x 3.25" tall.
