A highly detailed carved Alaska king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) by acclaimed Inupiaq artist Brian Kulik (b.1976), masterfully executed in walrus tusk and presented within a richly textured underwater diorama incorporating a remarkable assortment of natural Arctic materials. The crab is shown in an alert defensive posture with raised body, articulated legs, and extended claws, its segmented carapace carved in crisp relief and complemented by baleen-inlaid eyes that lend the sculpture a striking sense of realism. The composition is mounted upon a natural whale epiphyseal disk transformed into a convincing seafloor environment. The surface is richly textured with fossilized fragments of walrus tusk and woolly mammoth tusk that imitate gravel and shell-strewn sediment, while upright elements of natural baleen and black coral rise from the base as aquatic vegetation, creating movement, depth, and an immersive underwater setting. The interplay of creamy white carving, dark organic materials, and the warm patina of the whale bone produces a dramatic palette of natural textures and colors that beautifully frame the central figure. Combining an impressive scale with an unusually complex mixed-media construction, the diorama showcases Kulik's distinctive approach of integrating numerous Arctic materials into a single cohesive composition. The result is a sculptural work that is equal parts wildlife study and underwater landscape. Signed on the base. Measures approximately 9.5" x 8.5" x 8.5" tall.
