Category: Ethnographic Objects
An early 20th century Inupiaq baleen basket of broad, low-profile form, tightly woven from dark baleen strips with subtle lighter baleen accents incorporated throughout the body and matching lid. The basket is surmounted by a carved fossilized walrus tusk finial depicting a long-tailed land mammal, likely a fox, rendered in a simplified sculptural form. The underside retains a circular base charger fashioned from mineralized walrus tusk displaying attractive caramel coloration and natural mottling. The restrained form and emphasis on contrasting materials reflect the refined baleen basketry traditions of northern Alaska during the early twentieth century. Loose fibers are present throughout, consistent with age and as photographed. Basket measures approximately 4.5" in diameter x 2.75" tall. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Henry B. Collins and descendants. Collins (1899-1987) served as Senior Archaeologist and Head Curator of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution and spent decades conducting research throughout Alaska and the Bering Strait region.
