An Inupiaq baleen basket of rounded form by noted Point Hope artist Elmer Frankson (1925-2005), signed "Ekayuke." Expertly woven from dark baleen strips with lighter natural white baleen accents creating a subtle radiating pattern throughout the body and lid, the basket is fitted with a matching domed lid surmounted by a finely carved walrus tusk whale-tail finial. The interior retains a circular walrus tusk starter disk. The dense, even weaving and pleasing contrast between the dark and light baleen lend the basket considerable visual appeal. Elmer Frankson, who worked under the Inupiaq name "Ekayuke," was among the most accomplished baleen basket makers of the twentieth century and helped popularize the art form beyond Alaska. His work is represented in numerous museum and private collections and is noted for its exceptionally fine weaving and elegant use of carved marine mammal elements. Basket measures approximately 3.75" diameter x 3.5" tall. Signed "Ekayuke" to the underside.
