An exceptional Alaska Native Cup'ig fancy atkuk, or ceremonial parka, handmade in the late 1970s or early 1980s and accompanied by original documentation tracing its purchase in 1988 and later care by David Green & Sons of Anchorage. A handwritten note accompanying the garment attributes its decorative elements to the maker's family and home community of Mekoryuk on Nunivak Island, reflecting the rich sewing traditions of the Cup'ig people. The full-length pullover parka is constructed primarily from finely matched mountain squirrel pelts and richly embellished with white caribou hide panels, geometric beadwork, and red wool yarn accents. A dramatic two-tone ruff composed of badger and wolverine fur surrounds the hood, while numerous suspended tassels of wolverine and otter fur animate the garment in a manner characteristic of ceremonial Nunivak Island attire. The large white caribou chest panel is bordered by precise stitching and beadwork, echoed by additional geometric trim at the cuffs and lower hem. Included with the parka are the original 1988 purchase receipt, a 2005 cleaning and repair invoice from David Green & Sons, and photographs depicting related examples. The accompanying handwritten note records the principal materials as mountain squirrel, wolverine, otter, badger, caribou, and beadwork, and specifically associates the garment with Mekoryuk Village on Nunivak Island. The satin hood lining is partially detached from the hide, as photographed. Otherwise, the parka remains exceptionally well preserved, retaining vibrant fur, beadwork, and decorative elements throughout.
