A large adult-sized fossil tooth from the extinct giant shark Otodus megalodon, recovered from the fossil-rich deposits of West Java, Indonesia. Measuring an impressive 5.5 inches in height, the specimen exhibits attractive light cream coloration and exceptional preservation, highlighted by a robust, fully intact root and a striking white bourlette. The enamel blade retains sharp, well-defined serrations along both cutting edges, contributing to its strong display appeal and collector desirability. Megalodons inhabited the world's oceans approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago and are regarded as the largest sharks ever known, with estimates ranging up to eighty feet in length. Because shark skeletons are composed primarily of cartilage, which rarely fossilizes, teeth such as this represent the principal surviving evidence of these ancient apex predators and provide valuable insight into their anatomy and ecology. West Java has become renowned for producing some of the finest and largest Megalodon teeth known, and examples displaying a solid root, bright bourlette, and intact serrations are particularly sought after. With its pleasing symmetry, excellent preservation, and dramatic size, this specimen represents a remarkable example of one of the most iconic fossils of the prehistoric seas. Measures approximately 5.53" long x 4.5" wide.
