An original oil painting by Alaska artist Harvey B. Goodale (1900-1980), depicting a joyful scene from Nalukataq, the traditional Inupiat spring whaling festival celebrated following a successful bowhead whale hunt. Suspended high above the crowd, a young girl in a bright rose-colored parka appears to float among towering white clouds while a circle of villagers below gathers around the blanket, their colorful parkas rendered in expressive strokes of blue, ivory, yellow, and crimson. One of the most recognizable traditions of Alaska's North Slope, the blanket toss was historically used by hunters to gain an elevated view of the surrounding landscape and sea ice, while today it remains a cherished community celebration of gratitude, abundance, and shared heritage. Goodale captures the moment with remarkable energy, contrasting the grounded ring of spectators with the airborne figure silhouetted against a luminous sky, creating a composition that is both dynamic and uplifting. Harvey B. Goodale devoted much of his career to documenting the people, customs, and landscapes of Alaska through expressive painterly compositions that emphasized atmosphere and human connection over strict realism. His portrayals of Alaska Native life remain among his most sought-after works, preserving scenes of everyday life and enduring cultural traditions with warmth and sensitivity. Signed in the lower right corner, the painting is presented in a wood frame with a gold-tone inner molding and woven fabric liner. Minor areas of craquelure are present in the upper left and upper right portions of the composition. Overall measurements are approximately 46" x 34" with an image sight of 36" x 24".
