A 19th-century Eskimo bird dart, hand-crafted from wood and exhibiting a deep, rich patina. The long shaft terminates in three individually formed barbed bone prongs, securely lashed together with tightly wrapped cordage. Each tine features a series of carefully cut retaining barbs designed to prevent waterfowl from escaping after impact, demonstrating the ingenuity and effectiveness of traditional Arctic hunting technology. Bird darts of this form were employed throughout coastal Alaska and the Bering Sea region for harvesting ducks, geese, and other seabirds, providing an important source of food and materials for Indigenous communities. The multi-pronged arrangement increased the chance of striking fast-moving birds while the numerous barbs ensured a secure hold. Such implements represent generations of accumulated knowledge and adaptation to the demanding Arctic environment. Displaying beautiful age, excellent scale, and strong visual presence, this remarkable example retains its original cord lashings and measures approximately 1.75" x 1.75" x 61" overall.
