An original watercolor painting by renowned American artist Theodore J. Richardson (1855-1914), depicting a Tlingit coastal village at dusk. Canoes glide across calm waters in the foreground, while weathered wooden structures and fishing craft line the shoreline beneath a distant mountain range illuminated by the warm hues of the evening sky. Executed in Richardson's characteristic muted palette, the composition beautifully captures the quiet rhythms of life along Alaska's Inside Passage during the late nineteenth century. Born in Maine and raised in Minnesota, Richardson worked as a drawing instructor before first traveling to Alaska in 1884. Enchanted by the territory, he returned repeatedly and became one of the earliest and most influential artists to chronicle Alaska's landscapes and Indigenous communities. His paintings introduced the beauty and grandeur of the North to audiences throughout the United States and remain highly regarded for their historical importance and delicate treatment of light and atmosphere. The present work is particularly appealing for its intimate portrayal of a Tlingit settlement and traditional dugout canoes, offering a glimpse into Southeast Alaska during a period of profound cultural and economic change. The watercolor is signed "T. Richardson" at lower right and is presented in a mat and frame. Overall measurements are approximately 13.75" x 18", with a sight area measuring approximately 5.75" x 10".
