An exceptional original oil painting entitled McKinley - Wilderness Sundown by celebrated Alaska artist Ernest E. Robertson (b. 1939), representing the finest Robertson our firm has ever had the pleasure of bringing to market. Executed on a monumental 30" x 48" canvas and originally commissioned by National Bank of Alaska in 1998, this commanding composition captures Denali rising above a vast expanse of layered mountain ranges bathed in the warm glow of an Arctic sunset. Rich hues of lavender, violet, rose, and gold illuminate the massive snow-covered peak and surrounding glaciers, while dark alpine ridges and silhouetted spruce forests provide dramatic contrast in the foreground. The result is a landscape of extraordinary scale, atmosphere, and visual impact, showcasing Robertson's mastery of color, light, and the grandeur of the Alaska wilderness. Born in Washington and raised in Sitka following his family's move to Alaska in 1947, Robertson developed into one of Alaska's most recognized landscape painters. Largely self-taught, he spent decades studying the techniques of historic masters while traveling extensively throughout Alaska, sketching and photographing remote landscapes that later served as inspiration for his paintings. After careers ranging from commercial fishing to broadcasting and business ownership, Robertson devoted himself fully to painting, earning a devoted following for his luminous portrayals of Alaska's mountains, coastlines, forests, and wilderness. His work has been exhibited widely and remains among the most sought-after examples of contemporary Alaska landscape art. The significance of this painting is further enhanced by the inclusion of the original 1998 letter written by Robertson to the commissioning clients. In remarkably candid language, the artist discusses the development of the composition and his decision to omit a planned foreground campsite because he felt the wilderness character of the painting was simply too powerful to disturb. Robertson famously described the completed work as "one hell of a painting," noting that even he was impressed with the result and that it possessed a unique quality unlike any other painting he had previously produced. He further remarked that he could happily live with the painting himself for years, a rare and revealing endorsement from the artist regarding the success of a specific composition. The correspondence provides an extraordinary level of provenance and insight into Robertson's creative process seldom encountered with Alaska artwork. Combining monumental scale, exceptional execution, documented commission provenance, and direct commentary from the artist himself, McKinley - Wilderness Sundown stands as a premier example of Ernest Robertson's career and a centerpiece-quality Alaska landscape. Signed lower left and dated 1998. Housed in an ornate gilt frame with linen liner. Accompanied by the original artist letter. Measures approximately 39" x 57" overall with a sight view of 30" x 48".
