A late 19th or early 20th century Tlingit rattle-top basket, meticulously hand-coiled from split spruce root and displaying exceptional technical precision. The shallow circular form is ornamented with an intricate series of geometric stepped motifs executed in rich mahogany-brown hues through the false embroidery technique, wherein dyed grasses or roots are wrapped around the exterior stitches to create complex patterns. The fitted lid is surmounted by a raised hollow knop containing small pebbles, producing a soft rattling sound when shaken and giving rise to the form's traditional name. Such baskets were prized both for their utilitarian function and ceremonial significance and represent one of the most sophisticated weaving traditions of the Northwest Coast. The fine and uniform weave and strong preservation make this a great example of Southeast Alaska Native artistry. Basket measures approximately 6.75" in diameter x 2.75" tall.
