A large-format original acrylic painting on canvas by influential Alaska artist Alex Duff Combs (1919-2008), executed in his characteristic abstract expressionist style. The composition depicts three elongated, faceless figures joined together in a rhythmic, dance-like embrace, their luminous white forms boldly contrasted against an energetic field of layered crimson, violet, blue, and black brushstrokes. Thick impasto and sweeping gestural strokes create a sense of movement and emotional intensity, exemplifying Combs' lifelong interest in abstraction and the expressive power of the human form. Born in Hazard, Kentucky, Combs earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Temple University's Tyler School of Art in 1952 before relocating to Alaska in 1955. Widely regarded as a pioneering force in the development of modern and contemporary art in the state, he served as Superintendent of Art for the Anchorage School District and later taught for nearly three decades at Anchorage Community College, mentoring generations of Alaskan artists. His influence extended beyond painting into ceramics, sculpture, and public art, including his monumental concrete frieze for the Anchorage Museum. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Governor's Individual Artist Award in 2002, and the annual Alex Combs Award was established in his honor. Today, his work is represented in the collections of the Anchorage Museum and other institutions, and he is often credited with helping introduce abstract expressionism and modernist concepts to Alaska. This bold and highly expressive composition is housed in a black frame and measures approximately 50" x 42" overall, with a sight area measuring approximately 48" x 40".
