An American Watch Co. Model 1857 pocket watch with Wm. Ellery grade movement, produced circa 1866. This size 18s double hunter pocket watch is housed in a coin silver case with engraved "W.S." monogram cartouche to the front cover and a finely engine-turned decoration within. The white enamel dial features black Roman numerals, dark hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial positioned at six o’clock. The gilt-toned seven jewel adaptable movement is signed by the maker and visible beneath the hinged rear cover. Interior case markings identify the coin silver construction, and the watch retains both hinged covers, crown, and suspension bow. Produced immediately post-Civil War, the Wm. Ellery grade, named in honor of William Ellery, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is the quintessential "soldier's watch" and known for its rugged and reliable movement. The watch company gifted a model 1857 Wm. Ellery to the late President Abraham Lincoln in commemoration of his Gettysburg Address, and to demonstrate that even the President could carry the same watch as enlisted men. The company later became the Waltham Watch Co. Maker: American Watch Co. Model: 1857 Grade: Wm. Ellery Size: 18s S/N: 223837 Est.
