Mattel Barbie's Dream House (#816), c.1962, housed in its original suitcase-style carrying case with mid-century modern exterior graphics and fold-out room interior. The portable Dream House reflects Barbie's early-1960s world, with printed room graphics and lightweight furniture designed to pack into the carrying case for storage and travel. When closed, it features an illustrated teal facade depicting a classic 1960s suburban studio apartment exterior, complete with sliding glass doors, a potted plant, and double front doors. When unlatched and swung open, it reveals a fully decorated interior studio apartment meant to be styled with its accompanying flat-pack cardboard furniture. Includes an assortment of original-style furnishings and accessories, including bed and bedding, sofa, chair and ottoman, coffee table, television/record player console, miniature books and magazines, framed portraits, dishes, serving pieces, utensils, grooming accessories, and additional household items as photographed. Notably, Barbie did not cook, eat, or use the restroom in her first studio apartment! Since Barbie was portrayed as a busy, independent bachelorette who worked hard by day and went on glamorous dates with Ken by night, it was assumed she always dined out at restaurants, and historians have noted that her first bathroom did not appear until the 1970s. The case measures approximately 25.5" x 13.5" x 8" tall.
