A striking Qing dynasty Chinese hardwood duobaoge, or “many-treasure” display cabinet, combining asymmetrical open niches with drawers and enclosed lower storage. The alternating heights and widths turn the front into a miniature architectural composition, offering an attractive setting for porcelain, jade and other small works of art. The cabinet is richly decorated with relief-carved figures in animated poses, trees, floral scrolls and pierced fretwork. Gold-, copper- and red-toned accents bring the narrative panels forward against the dark wood; small hanging pendants enliven the pierced borders above the open niches. Geometric key-fret borders frame the scenes, while patinated metal pulls complement the ornament. Two drawers alternate above and below the display spaces, and paired lower doors open to a storage compartment. The decorated surface shows rubbing, scuffs and areas of finish loss consistent with age. The hardwood species has not been established. Measures approximately 30.5" wide x 14.5" deep x 48" tall.
