Two Alaska Native seabird compositions with contrasting approaches to a miniature rookery. Iñupiaq artist Justin Tiulana’s (1947–2025) work arranges five walrus ivory puffins along the projecting forms of a whalebone vertebra, using its porous pale surface as a rugged cliff. Black wings, white bodies and red-orange bills and feet give the birds a lively presence. Signed Justin Tiulana on the reverse. The companion work by Iñupiaq carver Andy Mayac of King Island places seabirds on antler-section terrain attached to a black rectangular base, signed underneath. The smaller work includes some disconnected pieces, as pictured. Tiulana composition dimensions: Approximately 3" wide x 2.5" deep x 5.25" high.
