Two Alaska carvings led by John Komakhuk’s Spirit Hunter, signed and dated 1992 at Nome. A hooded bone-and-soapstone figure sits in a long wooden kayak, with a broad double-ended paddle crossing the deck. A green mottled soapstone seal rests forward of the hunter, while miniature hunting equipment, coiled cord and a small float-like form furnish the slender boat. The contrast between warm wood, pale hood and dark modeled face gives the composition a strong sculptural presence. The companion work by Iñupiaq artist Ben Saclamana (b. 1934) of King Island depicts two soapstone seals facing one another on a rock-form base. The underside is signed “Ben Saclamana / King Island / Alaska.” The seal group has surface scuffs and small chips, including loss at a rear flipper tip and along the base. Spirit Hunter measures approximately 17.25" x 6.25" x 3.5" high.
