A characterful reclining walrus by Alaska Native artist Billy Soonagrook of St. Lawrence Island, carved from walrus ivory with a broad rounded body and its head turned back over one shoulder. Fine black scrimshaw defines the whiskered muzzle, small eyes and flipper details. Two slender, translucent walrus-whisker tusks extend below the head, adding a delicate contrast to the solid ivory form. The underside carries an ownership inscription reading “Property of Karl Reinhard” and a separate notation naming Billy Soonagrook and St. Lawrence Island. The notation is retained as recorded identification, rather than represented as the artist’s own signature. Surface marks and fine checks are visible. Approximately 4.25" x 1.5" x 2.25".
