A sculptural soapstone muskox by Iñupiaq artist Sylvester Ayek (b. 1940), signed Ayek. The animal is reduced to strong, rounded forms: a lowered head, gently curving horns and an unbroken skirt of fur. Creamy-white stone with soft mottling and fine natural veining lends warmth to the polished surface. The restrained carving emphasizes the muskox’s weight and compact silhouette. Approximately 3.75" x 5.5" x 4" tall.
