A sculptural walrus ivory polar bear and seal carving by a member of the Payena family, Iñupiaq artists from the remote Bering Sea island community of Little Diomede, Alaska. The open-mouthed bear rises above a seal nestled within the hollow base, where the ivory’s textured secondary dentine becomes part of the composition. Baleen-inlaid eyes and seal spots sharpen the contrast between the two animals. The specific family member is unidentified. Noted Payena family artists include Gabriel, Hubert and Benjamin. Measures approximately 3" x 4.5" x 4" tall.
