A distinctive wall-hanging loon spirit mask by Iñupiaq artist David Oksoktaruk of Nome, Alaska, signed and dated 1998 on the reverse. The carved wooden bird spreads its finely detailed wings across an oval hoop, its body enclosing a mottled soapstone face with round eyes and an open mouth. Light-colored feather-form ornaments radiate from the hoop, while three soapstone pendants—two angular forms and a central ulu shape—hang below. The honey-toned wood, black-painted elements and richly variegated stone create a lively contrast. Light surface wear and fine crazing to some black-painted areas are visible. Approximately 12.5" x 3" x 16.75" tall.
