A walrus ivory hooded merganser by Iñupiaq artist Al Mayac (1950–2014), carved in a sleek, extended diving pose. The bird’s long bill, flattened body and trailing yellow feet give the miniature a strong sense of forward movement. Incised plumage is picked out in black, white and brown, while a curved ivory support raises the bird above a faceted rectangular base. Signed “Al Mayac” and titled “Hooded Merganser” underneath. One foot is broken with substantial loss, as shown in the detail photographs. The broken fragment is not included. Approximately 4.25" x 1.5" x 1.5" tall.
