Two Artist's Proof photographs by Alaska wildlife photographer Johnny Johnson (1947-2025), both signed and dated 2004. "Frozen Eden" shows an emperor penguin colony at Cape Darnley, Antarctica, with adults and their downy chicks gathered beneath towering walls of ice. Warm sunlight catches the birds and the deeply carved faces of the icebergs, while a bank of dark cloud hangs over the distant ice. Brown chicks nestle among the black-and-white adults, and smaller groups extend across the snow toward the great frozen walls beyond. The golden light brings an unexpected warmth to this remote Antarctic nursery. "King Penguins" follows a loose procession of birds across the snow at Right Whale Bay, South Georgia. Yellow-orange neck markings stand out against their white breasts and dark backs, with two birds near the front turning toward one another, their flippers extended. Behind them, a steep mountain rises from the shore, its dark rock faces divided by broad slopes and narrow gullies of snow. Low cloud obscures the summit, leaving the penguins' animated gathering beneath a vast, wintry backdrop. Both photographs are signed and dated in gold leaf ink and marked A/P. Their accompanying information sheets describe Cibachrome/Ilfochrome prints. They are shrink-wrapped on board, with the larger measuring approximately 20.5" x 24.5".
