Manufacturer: Lee-Enfield Type: Rifle Model: No. 4 Mk I Caliber: .303 British Barrel Length: 23.5" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4144 S/N: JG26455 Ref #: 1083398 Notes: A Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I .303 British rifle in Santa Fe sporter configuration, with a 23.5-inch barrel, shortened wooden fore-end and Williams rear sight. The bolt assembly is missing, leaving the rifle incomplete and inoperable. Golden State Arms, Pasadena, and Santa Fe markings connect this example with the postwar commercial conversion of military-surplus rifles for sporting use. The No. 4 developed as a British military rifle and saw extensive service during the Second World War. Its action belongs to the Lee-Enfield rear-locking bolt family. Postwar sporter conversions retained the military receiver and chambering while reducing the wood around the barrel and adapting the sights and furniture to a sporting configuration. This example preserves that transition from military service-rifle design to civilian sporting arm. The shortened wooden fore-end exposes much of the blued barrel. A front blade is paired with the barrel-mounted Williams rear sight, and the wooden buttstock retains a metal trapdoor buttplate. Sling swivels are fitted beneath the stock and fore-end. One detachable box magazine is included, projecting below the receiver in the characteristic Lee-Enfield form. The .303 British chambering was a longstanding British service cartridge that also became familiar in sporting rifles, particularly as surplus Lee-Enfields entered civilian use. The wood on this example has scratches, dents and aged discoloration, and the metal has thinning finish and patina. The missing bolt is the principal completeness issue.
