Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Type: Revolver Model: 19-4 Caliber: .357 Mag Barrel Length: 6" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4253 S/N: 66K1315 Ref #: N/A Notes: A Smith & Wesson Model 19-4 .357 Magnum revolver commemorating the City of Los Angeles bicentennial, 1781–1981, presented with a fitted wooden case, commemorative medallion and illustrated anniversary pamphlet. The polished blued revolver has a 6-inch barrel, six-shot fluted cylinder and double-action/single-action mechanism. Gold-toned anniversary lettering and a Los Angeles Police Department emblem distinguish this example, connecting the familiar Combat Magnum design with a specific milestone in the city’s history. The revolver’s traditional finish and furniture are particularly well suited to the presentation. Smooth reddish-brown wooden target-style grips carry inset Smith & Wesson medallions and contrast with the reflective blue of the barrel, frame and cylinder. A red-insert ramp front sight and adjustable rear sight form a target-style sighting arrangement, with the 6-inch barrel providing a longer sight radius than the shorter service configurations. Other features include an exposed case-colored hammer and trigger, a checkered cylinder release, swing-out cylinder and shrouded ejector rod. The right side of the barrel is inscribed “1781 CITY OF LOS ANGELES 200th ANNIVERSARY 1981,” and the frame carries the commemorative police emblem. The civic dates and departmental imagery continue across the accompanying presentation materials, tying the decorated revolver to the city’s bicentennial celebration and its law-enforcement heritage. Developed during the 1950s with input from U.S. Border Patrol officer Bill Jordan, the Combat Magnum brought .357 Magnum chambering to Smith & Wesson’s medium K-frame. The design combined the proportions of a service revolver with adjustable sights and Magnum capability, establishing an enduring place in American law-enforcement and sporting-firearm history. Dating to circa 1980, this Model 19-4 represents an earlier engineering variation of the Combat Magnum, combining the long barrel with the commemorative treatment. The wooden presentation case has a fitted blue velvet-style interior, brass-colored hardware and a Los Angeles Police Department emblem on the lid. A separate plaque reads “City of Los Angeles 200th Anniversary 1781–1981.” The medallion rests beside the revolver, and a case key is included. The illustrated pamphlet names the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club and depicts a matching commemorative presentation. Together, the firearm, case and supporting materials form a cohesive set of interest to Smith & Wesson collectors and collectors of Los Angeles police memorabilia. The revolver retains a strong reflective blue finish and clearly defined commemorative markings, with light handling marks on the metal and grips. The case shows exterior scuffing and wear to its anniversary plaque; the fitted blue lining remains presentable.
