Manufacturer: Remington Type: Shotgun Model: The Sportsman (Model 11) Caliber: 20 GA Barrel Length: 28" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4246 S/N: S4196 Ref #: N/A Notes: A Remington The Sportsman Model 11 20-gauge semi-automatic shotgun with a 28-inch barrel, bird-scene receiver decoration and checkered wooden furniture. The squared rear receiver profile identifies the Browning-derived long-recoil design, while the engraved birds and vegetation provide the distinctive Sportsman treatment. The plain barrel has a front bead and is marked Full for its choke. Introduced in 1930, The Sportsman was a three-shot sporting variation of the Remington Model 11. Its early S-prefix serial, S4196, and three-bird receiver scenes are characteristic of the early configuration. The barrel carries an AA date code for March 1932. The three-shot designation refers to the model's total capacity, a distinction from magazine capacity alone. This example illustrates Remington's early twentieth-century approach to combining a self-loading sporting action with decorative receiver work. The long-recoil system allows the barrel and bolt to travel rearward together during the operating cycle, distinguishing it from later gas-operated Remington shotguns. An under-barrel tubular magazine, right-side charging handle and ejection port, and crossbolt safety complete the arrangement. The brown stock has a checkered pistol grip and ventilated recoil pad, with a matching checkered forearm beneath the barrel. The 20-gauge chambering and full-choke barrel place this configuration within the traditional upland sporting category. The metal retains its bird scenes and maker markings, with localized oxidation and finish wear. The wood has scratches, dents and thinning finish, and the recoil pad is worn.
