Its polished stainless steel frame and barrel are paired with black checkered rubber grips, providing the contrast of bright metal and dark contoured furniture. The compact J-frame layout retains an exposed hammer and conventional swing-out cylinder. Introduced in 1965 as the stainless steel counterpart to the Chief's Special, the Model 60 helped establish stainless steel as a regular-production revolver material. That construction became an important part of Smith & Wesson's compact-revolver line, combining the familiar Chief's Special dimensions with a different exterior material and finish. The sights consist of a fixed front ramp and rear notch integrated into the frame. A serrated hammer spur, textured cylinder-release latch and exposed ejector rod complete the arrangement. The three-inch barrel provides a longer sight radius than the shortest snub-nose versions while maintaining the small-frame configuration. Its .38 Special chambering is a longstanding companion to this class of Smith & Wesson revolver. The stainless surfaces retain a reflective appearance with scattered scratches, discoloration and cylinder rotation marks. The black rubber grips show light surface wear, with their checkered texture remaining distinct.
