Manufacturer: UNK Type: Blackpowder Rifle Model: UNK Caliber: .40 Barrel Length: 27.25" Optics: Iron Sight ATF Form 4473 Required: No Log: N/A S/N: NSN Ref #: 1337971 Notes: A likely Russian percussion muzzleloading rifle of the mid to late nineteenth century, with a 27.25-inch dark-finished barrel, hand-carved hardwood half-stock and a round hinged cap box inset into the buttstock. Deep geometric and leaf-like decoration extends along both sides of the wrist and butt, with additional carving beneath the stock. These individual decorative details are the most distinctive features of the rifle. The external percussion hammer and lock, single trigger and metal trigger guard follow a form widely used during the nineteenth century. Percussion ignition marked an important development after the flintlock, while the half-stock configuration left much of the barrel exposed. The rifle has traditional iron sights, a ramrod carried beneath the barrel and sling attachment loops. The circular metal cap box opens through a hinged cover and provides a small recessed compartment in the right side of the stock, a feature associated with percussion-era sporting arms. Faint markings and the number 17585 appear near the barrel breech. The number's role has not been established. The rifle has a .40-caliber bore. The stock has numerous dents, scratches, finish loss and darkened areas, while the carving remains clearly visible. The barrel, lock and fittings show oxidation, thinning finish and patina. The cap box is tarnished and discolored.
