Its long barrel, hardwood furniture and exposed-hammer break action give this example the traditional proportions of an American single-barrel field gun. A ventilated H&R recoil pad and pale spacer finish the buttstock. The Topper Model 148 was produced from 1957 through 1961. The barrel carries a brass-colored front bead, with the long sighting plane extending back to the receiver. The action has a single trigger and exposed hammer, and the receiver is marked Topper Model 148 and Harrington & Richardson, Inc. The Full Choke designation identifies the barrel’s intended tighter patterning configuration. Smooth reddish-brown wood forms the buttstock and slender fore-end. The rounded pistol-grip wrist, gently curved comb and extended barrel retain the straightforward lines for which the Topper family is known. H&R’s single-shot designs occupied a durable place in the sporting market by concentrating on a simple hinged action and a readily recognizable set of controls. The receiver has a gray patina and the barrel blue is thinning with use. The wood shows scattered handling scratches, and the H&R-marked recoil pad remains fitted.
