Victor Special 12-gauge single-shot shotgun with a 30-inch barrel, hardwood furniture and exposed-hammer break action. The long barrel and slender fore-end give it the familiar outline of an early American single-barrel sporting gun, with a brass-colored front bead and a red buttplate completing its plain, practical configuration. A checkered top lever sits behind the receiver, and the single trigger is enclosed by a rounded guard. The smooth buttstock has a shaped pistol-grip wrist, contrasting with the small fore-end beneath the barrel. These uncomplicated fittings reflect the economical field-gun market served by Crescent’s many retailer and distributor brands. Crescent operated in Norwich, Connecticut and supplied shotguns under numerous trade names. Victor and Victor Special are associated with the Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett hardware trade of Chicago, making this example part of the broader history of firearms distributed through hardware houses rather than exclusively under a factory’s principal name. The metal has dark mottled patina and substantial thinning of the barrel finish. The stock has a chipped toe, and small holes with an added screw at the wrist are consistent with an earlier repair. Those material wood issues accompany the expected handling marks on this older field gun. No separate accessories are included.
