Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Type: Revolver Model: 60 Caliber: .38 S&W SPL Barrel Length: 1.75" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4257 S/N: R226013 Ref #: N/A Notes: A Smith & Wesson Model 60 .38 Special five-shot revolver with a 1.75-inch barrel and stainless-steel construction. This compact J-frame example has black rubber grips and is accompanied by its factory box, user manual and spare grip pieces. The polished metal and short-barreled Chiefs Special profile give it the recognizable appearance of Smith & Wesson’s early stainless revolver line. The revolver has a fluted swing-out cylinder, exposed hammer and double-action/single-action trigger. A fixed front blade and integral rear sight groove keep the sighting system close to the barrel and frame. The fitted rubber grips have textured side panels and finger grooves, providing a fuller grip contour than the small wooden panels associated with many early J-frame revolvers. The barrel is marked .38 S&W SPL and the frame carries the MOD. 60 designation. Those markings identify this example as a .38 Special Model 60, distinct from later Magnum-chambered versions of the same model family. Introduced in 1965 as the stainless counterpart to the Model 36 Chiefs Special, the Model 60 was Smith & Wesson’s first stainless-steel handgun. It brought that corrosion-resistant material to the company’s established small-frame, five-shot format and became an important milestone in the wider adoption of stainless construction for revolvers. The factory box and accompanying grip pieces add to the presentation of this example. The stainless surfaces show handling scratches and scuffing, most apparent on the sideplate and beside the grip. The fitted rubber grips remain intact.
