Manufacturer: Enfield Type: Rifle Model: Martini-Henry Mk IV Caliber: .577/450 Martini-Henry Barrel Length: 33.25" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: No Log: N/A S/N: NSN Ref #: N/A Notes: An Enfield Martini-Henry Mk IV .577/450 single-shot rifle with a 33.25-inch barrel, long underlever and full military-style wooden fore-end. The action is marked with a crown over V.R., ENFIELD, 1886 and IV over 1. A sling and soft carrying case accompany this example, whose dark wood, long barrel and compact receiver preserve the recognizable form of a late Victorian British service rifle. The Martini mechanism uses a lever-actuated breechblock housed within the receiver, giving the rifle its distinctive lack of an external bolt or side-mounted hammer. The extended operating lever curves beneath the wrist and is one of the prominent features of the Mk IV configuration. A graduated rear sight and front blade run along the barrel’s sighting plane. The fore-end is held by metal bands, with a cleaning rod mounted beneath the barrel. The buttstock has a metal buttplate and several impressed roundels and other markings. Those physical marks are retained as part of this rifle’s historical character; the 1886 date is on the action itself. Introduced in 1871, the Martini-Henry family became the British Army’s principal infantry rifle for nearly two decades. It represented the move from converted muzzle-loaders to a purpose-built breech-loading service arm. The action’s 1886 Enfield date belongs to the Enfield-Martini period, before the decision in 1887 to convert those rifles to Martini-Henry form. Its later Mk IV configuration combines that early action with the characteristic long operating lever. The metal has aged patina and finish wear, and the wood shows numerous service and handling marks, including a chipped stock toe. The barrel retains rifling, consistent with the Martini-Henry rifle configuration rather than a later smoothbore conversion.
