The long barrel, solid-top frame and under-barrel loading lever give the Old Army a distinctive appearance among cap-and-ball revolvers. Dating to circa 1978, this example pairs the model’s traditional black-powder layout with a fuller, textured rubber grip treatment. The revolver has a six-chamber cylinder, exposed hammer and single-action mechanism. A fixed front blade and adjustable rear sight provide a more developed sighting system than the shallow hammer-notch arrangements found on many nineteenth-century-style reproductions. The loading lever lies beneath the barrel, integrated into the forward assembly. Ruger Old Army is marked on the frame, and the cylinder bears Black Powder Only and .44 Cal markings. Those legends identify the percussion design directly. The solid top strap encloses the cylinder area, giving the frame a continuous upper outline and distinguishing it from open-top Colt-pattern reproductions. The Old Army reflects Ruger’s own approach to the traditional cap-and-ball revolver, combining familiar historic proportions with the company’s modern revolver construction. The black rubber grips on this example provide a contrasting texture and fuller contour than the wooden panels fitted to many other examples. The finish shows handling wear, scratches and areas of patina, particularly around the frame and cylinder. The grip texture remains defined and the loading lever is present.
