Manufacturer: Colt Type: Revolver Model: Army Special Caliber: .38 SPL Barrel Length: 4" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4256 S/N: 423918 Ref #: N/A Notes: A Colt Army Special .38 Special revolver dating to circa 1917, with a 4-inch barrel, six-shot cylinder and dark blued finish. The barrel is marked COLT ARMY SPECIAL .38, while the checkered black grip panels carry prominent molded Colt ovals. Its exposed hammer, unshrouded ejector rod and fixed sights retain the characteristic form of an early Colt double-action service revolver. The fluted cylinder swings out to the left, with the release located behind it on the frame. A rounded front blade and rear frame groove provide the sighting arrangement. The narrow barrel and curved grip give the revolver a lean profile, contrasting with later heavy-barrel and full-underlug sporting designs. Colt’s rampant-horse emblem appears on the sideplate. The Army Special name belongs to Colt’s early twentieth-century double-action lineage. This example’s short barrel and plain fixed sights reflect the practical service-size configuration of the family. The revolver retains dark finish across much of the barrel and cylinder, with scratches, thinning finish and patina on the frame and edges. The molded grip lettering and checkering remain clearly defined, with ordinary handling wear.
