Manufacturer: Unknown Type: Blackpowder Rifle Model: Kentucky Style Caliber: Likely approximately .40; bore unmeasured Barrel Length: 45" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: No Log: N/A S/N: N/A Ref #: Notes: A Kentucky-style percussion long rifle with a 45-inch octagonal barrel, likely approximately .40 caliber, and a full-length stock with pronounced striped figure. Its exceptionally long, slender profile, two-trigger arrangement, shaped cheekpiece and stud decoration give this example a distinctive presentation within the American long-rifle tradition. A pale leather cover encloses the butt. The side-mounted percussion lock has an exposed hammer, with two triggers enclosed by a curved metal guard. Open iron sights extend along the barrel, and a ramrod is carried beneath the fore-end. Metal bands, pins and brass-colored studs punctuate the figured stock, while the cheekpiece and rounded wrist shape its rear profile. The barrel is stamped “75,” probably referring to the historical number of spherical lead balls to the pound. That interpretation is consistent with an approximately .40-caliber designation. It is an estimated identification rather than a measured bore: ball diameter, patch allowance, wear and any later reboring can affect the relationship between the marking and the present bore. The full stock, long octagonal barrel and percussion lock reflect a form established in nineteenth-century American sporting rifles. Comparable museum long rifles document this tradition in the 1830s through the mid-century period, but those comparisons do not establish this example’s manufacture date. Faint initials at the tang provide a further identifying detail without securely naming a maker. The stock shows handling marks, the metal has aged discoloration and patina, and the leather butt cover shows wear and darkening around its edges. The strong striped figure remains a prominent feature along the stock.
