Manufacturer: Marlin Type: Rifle Model: 781 Caliber: .22 S/L/LR (barrel marking) Barrel Length: 22" Optics: Iron Sights ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4288 S/N: 16698502 Ref #: 1041602 Notes: A Marlin Model 781 bolt-action rimfire rifle with a 22-inch Micro-Groove barrel marked for .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle. The rifle has a tubular magazine beneath the barrel and a checkered wooden sporting stock, combining a traditional shoulder-stock profile with Marlin’s distinctive rimfire barrel treatment. This example was made in 1984. The stock has a rounded pistol-grip wrist, pressed checkering panels and a slender fore-end. A Marlin-marked buttplate and pale spacer finish the rear, while sling attachment points remain fitted beneath the furniture. The dark barrel and receiver contrast with the warm brown wood. A hooded front sight and adjustable open rear sight provide the iron-sight arrangement. The receiver is grooved for compatible scope mounting, although no optic is installed. The turned-down bolt handle sits beside the stock wrist, and the magazine tube keeps the ammunition supply beneath the barrel without a projecting box magazine. The barrel legend reads Model 781, Micro-Groove Barrel and .22 Cal. S-L-LR, preserving the full chambering designation. Micro-Groove is Marlin’s name for its multiple shallow-groove rifling system, a longstanding feature of the company’s rimfire line. The manually operated bolt and three marked .22 cartridge lengths distinguish this model from a conventional .22 LR-only semi-automatic rifle. The wood shows handling scratches and a worn label on the fore-end. The barrel and magazine tube have finish wear and scattered oxidation, with the stock checkering and Marlin buttplate markings remaining distinct.
