Manufacturer: Browning Type: Shotgun Model: Auto-5 Caliber: 12 GA Barrel Length: 29.25" Optics: Front bead sight ATF Form 4473 Required: Yes Log: 4313 S/N: 44216 Ref #: 938132 Notes: A Browning Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun in 12 gauge, with a 29.25-inch plain barrel and gloss-finished walnut stock and fore-end. The squared rear of the receiver creates the unmistakable “humpback” profile associated with John M. Browning’s Auto-5. Its long barrel, bead front sight and conventional shoulder stock give this example the appearance of a classic sporting autoloader. The Auto-5 is a long-recoil design, with the barrel participating in the operating cycle rather than remaining fixed as on a gas-operated shotgun. That architecture was one of Browning’s important contributions to the development of the semi-automatic sporting shotgun. The original Auto-5 family remained in Browning’s line for much of the twentieth century. A checkered pistol-grip buttstock is paired with a fore-end cut with long parallel grooves. The fore-end surrounds the tubular magazine, while a brown ventilated Browning recoil pad and light-colored spacer finish the butt. Faint maker markings remain on the receiver, together with a separate handwritten “113” inventory mark. The wood retains much of its gloss, with handling marks and wear. The receiver has extensive rust and finish deterioration, and corrosion is also visible around the barrel and chamber opening.
